GDC Bishnah Students and Faculty Visited SKUAST-J Kisan Mela
Government Degree College (GDC) Bishnah organized an educational field visit to the Kisan Mela at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J) on 11th February 2026. The field exposure programme was organized by the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) of the college in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and Department of Botany.
A total of 35 students and 5 faculty members participated in the visit. The accompanying faculty members included Prof. Sania Hamid, Vice-President IIC; Prof. Shrotika Rajput, Coordinator IQAC; Dr. Sonika Khajuria, Convener IIC; Dr. Preeti Mahajan, Skill Coordinator; and Dr. Koushal Kiran, Convener, Discipline Committee of the college.
The visit aimed to provide students with practical exposure to advancements in agriculture, allied sectors, entrepreneurship, and sustainable technologies. The Kisan Mela featured a wide array of stalls set up by start-ups, progressive farmers, entrepreneurs, and various departments of SKUAST-J showcasing innovative practices and emerging opportunities in agriculture and rural development.
Students gained first-hand knowledge about modern skill-based fields such as hydroponics, agriforestry, apiculture, sericulture, silviculture, dairy farming, and other sustainable and innovative agricultural technologies. Experts at the stalls demonstrated advanced cultivation techniques, integrated farming systems, value addition of agricultural products, organic farming practices, and the use of climate-resilient crops. Students learned about the economic viability of hydroponic farming, scientific beekeeping methods for enhanced honey production, and the importance of agroforestry and silviculture in environmental conservation and income diversification.
The exposure to start-up ventures inspired students to understand the role of innovation and entrepreneurship in the agricultural sector. They interacted with young entrepreneurs who shared their journeys, challenges, and strategies for converting agricultural ideas into successful enterprises. The students also observed modern dairy management practices, disease control measures in livestock, and sustainable resource management techniques aimed at increasing productivity while preserving ecological balance.
In addition to academic and technical learning, students enthusiastically participated in rural sports competitions organized as part of the mela, including tug of war, volleyball, kabaddi, and other traditional games. Their participation fostered team spirit, physical fitness, and appreciation for rural cultural traditions.
The field visit proved to be highly informative and enriching, bridging the gap between classroom learning and practical application. It enhanced students’ understanding of innovation-driven agriculture and encouraged them to explore self-employment and skill-based career opportunities in the agricultural and allied sectors.
The Principal of GDC Bishnah appreciated the efforts of IIC and IQAC for organizing such a meaningful exposure visit and emphasized the importance of experiential learning in shaping students’ entrepreneurial mindset and holistic development.
The programme concluded successfully with students expressing gratitude for the opportunity to witness cutting-edge agricultural technologies and rural entrepreneurship models firsthand.
